New Study Reveals the Most Common Types of Crimes Committed in North Carolina

Charlotte Criminal Lawyer Brad Smith answers the question: “If I have an outstanding warrant, what should I do?”

The most recent research published on 24/7 Wall St. revealed the most common types of crimes that are being committed in Charlotte and other parts of North Carolina. The study concluded that in 2018, the most recent year for which crime data is available, crime was more common in North Carolina than it was on average across the United States.

In 2018, over 298,000 crimes were reported in North Carolina. When adjusted for population, the state’s crime rate was 2,872 crimes per 100,000 people. For the sake of comparison, the national crime rate in the U.S. was 2,580.

What are the Most Common Types of Crimes in North Carolina?

The study revealed the most common types of crimes committed in North Carolina. They were broken down into two categories:

  1. Property crimes (larceny, burglary, motor vehicle theft); and
  2. Violent crimes (robbery, aggravated assault, rape, murder).

Property Crimes

Property crimes accounted for a staggering 87% of all crimes reported in North Carolina in 2019. That is nearly 259,000 property crimes, or 2,494 per 100,000 people, which is higher than the national crime rate of 2,200 per 100,000 people.

  • Larceny is the most common type of property crime. Nationwide, larceny accounted for 72% of all property crimes. North Carolina’s crime rate for larceny was 1,724 per 100,000 residents.
  • Burglary or break-ins. There were over 62,000 reported break-ins in North Carolina. The crime rate of 600 per 100,000 residents was the sixth-highest rate in the U.S. in 2018.
  • Motor vehicle theft. The state’s rate of 170 reported crimes of motor vehicle theft per 100,000 residents was slightly lower than the national rate.

Violent Crimes

In North Carolina, violent crimes account for only 13% of all crimes across the state, which is slightly lower than the national rate (15%). North Carolina’s violent crime rate was 378 per 100,000 residents in 2018. There were nearly 40,000 violent crimes reported to law enforcement agencies in the state.

  • Aggravated assault. There were over 27,500 cases of aggravated assault reported to law enforcement agencies across North Carolina in 2018, or 265 per 100,000 residents. The crime rate was slightly higher than the national rate.
  • Robbery. After assault, robbery is the second most common type of violent crime in North Carolina and all across the U.S. In 2018, there were 8,423 robberies reported in the state.
  • Rape. In 2018, there were 2,633 rapes reported in North Carolina, or 25.4 per 100,000 residents.
  • Murder. North Carolina had 628 cases of murder reported to law enforcement agencies in 2018, or six per 100,000 residents.

Also, the study found that Mecklenburg County, in which Charlotte is located, had the highest crime rate in the state (4,212 per 100,000 residents).
